A fresh, leafy herb with a distinct look and flavour, coriander is an essential ingredient in lots of curries and Mexican dishes. The frilly-edged leaves make this an attractive plant to grow on your kitchen windowsill, ready for picking for a fresh garnish. It will also grow happily outside in a cool spot.

- Indoors sow thinly in trays or pots of compost, then cover lightly.
- Water, firm down and keep warm and moist. Seeds should germinate in 14-21 days.
- Outdoors sow thinly in growing position. Thin seedlings to 15cm (6in) apart.
- To harvest, pick leaves as required.

Coriander is an annual herb. It will give you harvests within the first year of growing. Excessive heat will cause the plant to bolt, producing flowers and seeds early. The seeds are edible and are often used ground or whole as a spice.
